Introducing GPT-4o: Enhancing Free Access to Advanced AI in ChatGPT

In a significant move towards democratizing artificial intelligence, OpenAI is excited to unveil GPT-4o, its latest flagship model, and announce the expansion of advanced features for ChatGPT free users.

Unveiling GPT-4o

GPT-4o represents a major leap forward, offering GPT-4-level intelligence with enhanced speed and capabilities across text, voice, and vision. This new model excels at interpreting and discussing images, enabling users to take a picture of a menu in a foreign language and converse with GPT-4o for translation, cultural insights, and personalized recommendations. Future updates will introduce real-time voice and video conversations, such as explaining the rules of a live sports game.

OpenAI’s new Voice Mode, featuring these capabilities, will enter an alpha phase in the coming weeks, initially available to Plus users before a broader rollout. GPT-4o's improved language processing now supports over 50 languages for sign-up, login, and user settings, making advanced AI more accessible globally.

Starting today, GPT-4o is being gradually introduced to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with Enterprise user availability on the horizon. Free users will also start to receive access, albeit with usage limits. Plus users will benefit from a message limit up to five times greater than free users, with even higher limits for Team and Enterprise users.

Expanding Free Access to Advanced Tools

Aligned with OpenAI’s mission to make AI tools widely accessible, more than 100 million people use ChatGPT weekly. OpenAI is now extending more intelligence and advanced tools to ChatGPT Free users. Key features include:

• Responses from both the model and the web
• Data analysis and chart creation
• Photo-based conversations
• File uploads for summarizing, writing, or analyzing
• Access to GPTs and the GPT Store
• Enhanced experiences with Memory

Free users will have a message limit when using GPT-4o, after which ChatGPT will switch to GPT-3.5 to maintain continuous service.

Streamlined Workflow with the New Desktop App

To enhance the user experience, OpenAI is launching a new ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, designed for seamless integration into users’ workflow. With a simple keyboard shortcut (Option + Space), users can instantly query ChatGPT. The app also supports taking and discussing screenshots and initiating voice conversations.

The macOS app, featuring Voice Mode and future audio and video capabilities, is available to Plus users starting today, with a broader release in the coming weeks. A Windows version is planned for later this year.

A Fresh Look for ChatGPT
